Market Update
Vermont Fares Better than Other Parts of the Nation

Sugar HouseThe press is painting a picture of the real estate market that is less than rosy.  Other parts of the nation are feeling things much more severely that we are, and for that, we are thankful.  I don't have to tell you what CNN is saying, you already know.  What I can tell you is that we are not seeing the drastic markets that we hear about.  A Florida resident said he has been purchasing 'short sale' properties at 40% of the 2006 assessments.  A Connecticut broker said he is listing many short sale properties every week.

The good news is....that is not the norm here!  Yes, our numbers are down, but we are not seeing the distress and the short sales that are in massive quantities seen elsewhere.  I think there are two factors for this.  Full article>>

Introducing "The Boot Pro"
Ludlow's Newest Ski Shop and Race Care Center

The Boot Pro Sign
This September, Shon Racicot and his wife Alex opened a new ski shop in the Marketplace at the base of the Okemo access road.  Named for its specialty, The Boot Pro offers top level custom bootfitting as well as expert ski and board tuning, sales of high performance ski boots, skis and accessories - with an emphasis on racing.

Shon Racicot, a lifetime resident of Ludlow and a ski racing & mountain enthusiast, started his career in the ski industry in 1986.  During his twenty-three consecutive years in ski retail in Ludlow, he worked in all aspects of sales and service and became a master bootfitter and store manager.

Bootfitting has always been Shon's passion.  He finds great satisfaction in modifying boots to accommodate a skier's/snowboarder's foot irregularities to improve comfort and performance.  He is a fifteen time graduate of Masterfit University, the official training center for ski and snowboard boot fitting.  In 2007, SKI Magazine called "Bootfitter Shon Racicot, Okemo's local secret.....a miracle worker".   Full article>>

Save by Cutting State Firewood
State Offers Firewood Program for Residents

Trees in WinterDid you know that the State of Vermont offers a program where residents can cut firewood on state land?  Residents can sign up to be assigned a lot that will contain approximately 3 cords of firewood, and for $30 can come cut it and take it home.

The Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation has given residents until Feb. 6 to sign up for one of 80 wood lots in the area.

The lot will be no further than 100-200 yards from the road.  Vehicles such as skidders, all-terrain vehicles and tractors are not allowed.  Full article>>

Endless Creations Pottery Opens in Chester
Endless Creations SignPaint Your Own Pottery

Endless Creations opened November 21st, 2008.  McEnaney & company's sales agent Melissa Howe and fiance Barry Lynch had the opportunity to purchase a property in Chester (see, it is a good time to buy!!), and start their own business.

Endless Creations ShelvesMelissa recently shared her story with us.  "I have had the vision to start a 'paint your own' pottery studio since April of this year.  After visiting one up north I decided it was something MY community should have. In the planning process I stumbled across the ancient spiral symbol that's on my sign, which means 'Creation in Endless Process.'  Hence, Endless Creations was born.  Barry has been such a support to my vision, I am so blessed.  I am finding balance between Real Estate...  Full article>>

Verizon Tower Now on Okemo
Cell Service Improves for Many Users

Are you a Verizon subscriber?  If you recently noticed a change in your service it is because there is now a Verizon Tower on Okemo.  Previously you were not able to send and receive picture messages in our area, but that's changed!   Both data service and cell coverage are improved by the new addition.  Thanks to all who were involved in accomplishing this project.

 'Tis the Season for Snowmobiles
Rental Businesses Stress Safety
By Marcia Stoller (compliments Rutland Business Journal)

Thanks to the 10,000 Vermont landowners who allow snowmobile trails through their private property, Vermonters and tourists can enjoy the beauty and thrills of traversing Vermont by snowmobile.

The members and volunteers of the Vermont Association of Snow Travelers, Inc. (VAST), groom the approximately 6,000 miles of trails in the state. Steve Torrey, manager of Killington Snowmobile Tours at the base of SunriseMountain in Killington, put it another way: "There are more miles of snowmobiling trails in this state than there are paved roads."  Full article>>

Homeowner's Insurance Check Up
Take Advantage of Discounts

We recently checked in with Audrey Hoszkiewicz of Ludlow Insurance for some information that may prove helpful in securing the best pricing for your insurance policies.

Did you know that if you have multiple policies with the same carrier you may qualify for a discount?  Some carriers offer discounts for other reasons as well:  Are you non-smokers?  Are you retired?  Do you have a central alarm system for smoke and intrusion?  How about a low temp alarm?  Full article>>

A Bit of History
Captain John Coffeen's Farm
Contributed by Bruce McEnaney

Coffeen CemeteryOn the South Reading Road in Cavendish near where the Crown Point Road marker lies, there's a small cemetery (on the left going north - across from the barn with a Black River Locker sign above the door).  Captain John Coffeen is buried there... this spot was his "patch" of land to clear and farm.  As he cleared trees, removed stones & stumps and prepared to build his house and barns, he most certainly wasn't aware that his cleared spot would play a small part in the American Revolution.

It happened in early July of 1777.  The American Forces had just abandoned Fort Ticonderoga to British General "Gentleman" Johnny Burgoyne.  The New Hampshire militia and regulars moved east towards the Crown Point Road.  After engaging in a rear guard action against British and Hessian soldiers near Hubbardton the requirements split - New Hampshire men to the east the rest to the south to Castleton.

The soldiers were disgusted with the war thus far.  They were tired of the lack of leadership from the Continental Army, the lack of supplies, and the humiliation of losing Ticonderoga without a shot being fired.  Most of the militia were farmers volunteering as soldiers.  Haying needed to be done and they were going home.  Full article>>

Chicken Soup for the Soul
The Hill

We cannot direct the wind...but we can adjust the sails.
Snowman on HillSource unknown

Long past midnight, hours before dawn
I jump from my bed, pull my longjohns on.
Peeking out the window, the snow has started to fall.
Slipping on my overalls, I race quickly down the hall.
Rushing to the closet, grasping my old wrap,
I throw it over my shoulder, give the button a snap.
Working all ten fingers, through the holes of much-worn mitts,
I stick my feet into the boots that thankfully still fit.
Faster than is possible, I head straight for the door.
Behind me I am dragging a sled from years before.  Full Story>>>
