Gill Home

If you have ever wondered what you can do to help out your local community….have we got something for you!  If you live locally, you know of the ‘Gill Home’.  If you aren’t familiar, please read on.

The Gill Odd Fellows Home is located on Gill Terrace off High Street in Ludlow.  It is part nursing home, part rehab location and, with the apartments, it is home to many folks.  Like everything else, costs are climbing, but the staff works non-stop to provide for the residents.

We checked in with them to see if we could help spread the word about some things they may need.  After listening to the list, I believe that there is some way that everyone could give them a hand.  If you see something on this list that you can help with, that would be great.  If you have another idea, they are all ears!

First…The Gill Home is undertaking a capital campaign, and they can surely use your dollars.
Second, they could use any of the following:

  • DVD’s or videos of musical concerts.  Please think about some musicians that the senior crowd would recognize and enjoy. (new, used, or loaned)
  • Family rated, feel good movies.  If you would like to provide them with new or used movies, they would welcome them.  (even just to borrow)
  • You can take this one step further.  They would love to have someone bring in his/her favorite movies to watch along with the residents and share with them why the movie is special.
  • New lipstick and blush.
  • Every bed has a hand made quilt.  They can always use backing fabric for a quilt, and batting for a twin bed size.
  • Pet visitors are welcomed if they are quiet, sociable animals, and if they have had all their shots.
  • On a similar note, farm animals are welcomed as a show and tell visitor.
  • How about calling a bingo game?
  • Perhaps you would rather help supply decorations for the holiday seasons.
  • Do you play a musical instrument?  Do you sing?  If your answer is ‘yes’, then they need you.
  • The Gill Home would like to find some ‘readers’ who will read to the residents.
  • They would love to have some cotton, mu-mu style, smock dresses.  They should be all cotton, loose and comfortable.  Sizes Medium to XXL, please.
  • Floor lamps or table lamps are needed.
  • They would love some flower bulbs. (Daffodils, paper whites, etc)  They will force some inside, and plant some outside.
  • Plants, plants, plants…live plants or artificial ones, inside or outside ones, flowers or veggies.
  • Would you adopt a resident?  There are folks that could use some company.
  • How about being a pen pal?  Several folks love to receive mail and don’t get much.
  • Would you be able to do some writing for a resident?  Could you write a letter or a card or take some notes for someone?
  • As you can see, any type of volunteering would be sincerely welcomed.
  • And finally, if you can contribute financially to the ongoing capital campaign, or if you can help with the fundraising, they would love to talk with you.

**By the way, if you take a drive up to Gill Terrace, you pass an interesting yellow Queen Anne style house.  If you are curious, here are the details.
